Argo AI is an artificial intelligence company that aims to make transportation safer, more accessible, cheaper, and more convenient for all through the use of self-driving cars. Founded by researchers from Carnegie Mellon University, the Pittsburgh startup has amassed $1 billion in total funding, primarily from an investment by Ford Motor Co. The relatively small company is currently attracting talent from tech giants such as Apple and Uber as a result of a lucrative perk: an equity stake for all new hires. “Every employee is an owner,” Argo CEO Bryan Salesky told the Wall Street Journal. “They’re able to benefit from the upside being created in a direct way.” The company has recently launched a 30-vehicle fleet in the city of Pittsburgh and is a legitimate competitor in the self-driving car race.
